During the first week of Israel's Operation 'Cast Lead', intended to curb rocket fire from the Gaza Strip, Palestinian launch crews used longer-ranged rockets to bring an increased number of Israeli communities under attack. According to one estimate published by the local press, by 31 December more than 800,000 Israelis were living in areas that were threatened by the new longer-ranged rockets
