The Final Fate of the HMS Vengeance / Minas Gerais

Laid down on November 16, 1942, at Swan Hunter, this vessel was commissioned as the HMS Vengeance on January 11, 1945. She served with the Royal Navy in the Pacific, and the Japanese surrender of Hong Kong was signed on her deck.

The ship was loaned to Australia from 1953 to late 1955, serving first as a training carrier and then as a fleet carrier in the Korean conflict as the HMAS Vengeance. Returned to the Royal Navy, she was sold to Brazil in late 1956. Named Minas Gerais, she was rebuilt at Rotterdam and served with the Brazilian Navy until October, 2001.

Several groups expressed interest in purchasing the ship and towing her to the UK as a museum, based on her historical significance as the last of the Colossus Class fleet carriers, and being the last surviving British WWII capital ship.

Supporters failed to raise enough money, and the ship was offered for sale. A scrap company from China bought her, but failed to follow through on their bid, so a private British citizen, shipping tycoon Philip Bush, purchased the vessel to buy the preservation groups more time. The ship sat rusting in Rio, costing thousands of dollars a month in mooring fees, while plans fell through to set the ship up as a museum due to lack of financial support. Time ran out, and Mr. Bush cut his losses and sold the vessel to a scrap merchant from Alang, India. A final auction in Rio afforded a final chance for a preservation group to purchase her, but all were well short of the $6.5 million dollar price tag.

The carrier was towed from Rio in February, 2004, and arrived at Alang in April. She was dragged up on the beach at high tide, and was being slowly cut up. By September the job was well advanced, and by February, 2005, no trace of her remained.

Air France Flight AF 447 (06.14.09 - Night)

Today, Jun 14th, at circa 11h45 pm (BST), will mark two weeks of the accident with the Airbus 330 Air France flight AF 447, which claimed more than 220 lives. The causes of the destruction of the airplane remain unknown.

With the forensic examination of the remains found (49 up to now) some theories already faded away. More notably the one which said that the airplane exploded and also the one which said that the airplane desintegrated in the air.

So far, we only know that something caused a major electrical failure. With the electrical system shutting down, it became more and more difficult to manualy fly a fly-by-wire airplane. And from the beginning to the end, it took circa of four minutes for the plane to crash in the water.

This week we may know also if when the airplane hit the water, everybody on bord was already dead.

Some debris had been found, but the Black Box has not been found. We're going to have more two weeks to find it before the batteries run out.

Air France Flight AF 447 (06.08.09 - Night)

Today, the Brazilian authorities had to make several adjustments in order to avoid more miscommunication. From now on, the Brazilian Navy will:
  • only account any new recovered remain when it is already under Brazilian custody.
  • not try anymore to determine the gender, leaving this job to the forensic authority.
  • not try to identify any object, debris or piece of the airplane as recovering, leaving this job to the French authority.
Along the day, were found eight more remains by the frigate Bosisio, increasing to 26 the number of remains already found.

At the same time, the French Navy (Fr Navy) already sent a submarine, the S604 Émeraude (Emerald). The US Navy is sending equipment to help the search (take a look on previous post). It's also informed, but not confirmed, that an American submarine was also deployed to help the search. There's no information about the identification of the vessel.

The Minister of Defense of Brazil, Nelson Jobim, just said that there is no doubt that the debris found near Saint Peter and Saint Poul Islands belong to the Air France plane - AF 447. Although only tomorrow the first Br Navy ship will be able to recover the debris, he believe that there is certain that debris are from the plane. They were found by Br Air Force, using the AWACS aircraft R-99.

Just now the spokesman from the Br Navy started to say that maybe the first ship, the patrol-ship Grajaú, will only arrive at 1800hs instead of 1100hs as originally said.

The S&R will continue with elements from Br Air Force, Br Navy, French Navy, Spanish Navy and US Navy.

News About the Air France AF 447

The Brazilian Airline Company Transportes Aéreos de Marília (TAM), who had a flight in the opposite direction of the flight AF 447 (Paris - Rio), told the Brazilian authorities that they saw flaming debris at the sea in the area where supposedly the AF 447 crashed.

The Brazilian Air Force is conducting electronic search through all the night.

The first Brazilian Navy ship will arrive Wednesday, 07:00 h. Although the previous information was that she could arrive tomorrow, Tuesday.

It's almost certain that there'll not be any survivors.

The French Government is also conducting searches. They dispatched ships from Senegal. They also asked to the US Government to liberate images of the area from an spy satellite.

Brazilian Navy will deploy three ships in S&R mission - AF 447

Brazilian Navy deployed three ships to Search and Rescue the Air France - AF 447. The frigate Constituição (Constitution), corvette Cabloco and a patrol ship Grajau, join the BR Air Force in the Search and Rescue missions. The frigate Constituição was returning from the Unitas Gold Exercise.

The French and Spanish Navy ships are also doing S&R missions.

Brazilian Air Force and Navy will continue the Search and Rescue Mission in the Night.

Brazilian Military decided not to suspend during the night the Search and Rescue mission on the AF 447. Along the night they will do electronic and night search in hope to find, if any, survivors from the fateful flight. There is a hope that the plane, even crashing in the ocean, may have some survivors. Although there is a very small possibility of finding survivors, the Brazilian Military decided that is important not to give up any hope. So the Brazilian Air force will not stop the S&R efforts.

BR NAVY 002

The Brazilian Military Commands gonna be move out from the Ministry Corridor in Brasilia, DF. And if you think they gonna have something like the Pentagon, is a no can do situation. The three Commands will move to three new facilities completely apart.

You keep wondering what exactly the former Rep. (PMDB-SP) Ulysses Guimarães, meant when he called the three Military Ministers (the equivalente of today's Military Commanders) the three Stooges...

Well at this moment the most popular song in the Military Commands is the Everly Brother's "Bye Bye Love".

Bye bye, love.
Bye bye, happiness.
Hello, loneliness.
I think I'm a-gonna cry-y.
Bye bye, love.
Bye bye, sweet caress.
Hello, emptiness.
I feel like I could di-ie.
Bye bye, my love, goodby-ye.

There goes my baby
With-a someone new.
She sure looks happy.
I sure am blue.
She was my baby
'Til he stepped in.
Goodbye to romance
That might have been.

Bye bye, love.
Bye bye, happiness.
Hello, loneliness.
I think I'm a-gonna cry-y.

Bye bye, love.
Bye bye, sweet caress.
Hello, emptiness.
I feel like I could di-ie.
Bye bye, my love, goodby-ye.

I'm a-through with romance.
I'm a-through with love.
I'm through with-a countin'
The stars above
And here's reason
That I'm so free:
My lovin' baby
Is a-through with me.

Bye bye, love.
Bye bye, happiness.
Hello, loneliness.
I think I'm a-gonna cry-y.

Bye bye, love.
Bye bye, sweet caress.
Hello, emptiness.
I feel like I could di-ie.
Bye bye, my love, goodby-ye.
Bye bye, my love, goodby-ye.
Bye bye, my love, goodby-ye.

Brazilian NAVY 001

A new case of homosexuality. A student of Navy Academy wants also to assume his sexual preferences.

Although I do believe that you must be free in your personal affairs, this is going a little to far with the inescapable damage to the Br. NAVY image.

If someone wants to be gay, so be it, I don´t care or mind, but this one can´t prevail over who does not want. Your personal affairs are exactly this: personal affairs.
