LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management, (ADEM) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announce the opening of a Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) in Ashley County at Crossett on Thursday, May 14, at noon.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Arkansas Department of Emergency Management officials urge residents and business owners dealing with damages and losses from the severe storms and tornadoes of April 9 to adopt a take-charge action plan that may help speed up the possibility of obtaining state and federal disaster aid.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has obligated nearly $35 million to the state of Arkansas for 375 eligible public assistance projects to date. This funding addresses damages and incurred costs brought about by the late January, 2009, ice storm.

Before beginning new construction or repairs to property damaged by the severe storms and tornadoes of April 9, Arkansas residents are encouraged to consult local building officials to get the necessary permits. Also State and federal officials caution those whose homes were damaged from the severe storms and tornadoes of April 9 to be extremely careful when hiring contractors to clean and repair disaster damaged property or remove disaster debris. Do some checking and verify their credentials.
